Dear Yuletide author
Dear Yuletide author,
Hi! First of all, thank you for signing up to write one of my beloved little fandoms! What follows is a good bit of rambling about my likes and dislikes and my feelings on each fandom. If it helps you to get to know me, great! If it makes you want to run screaming in the other direction, please don’t! I will appreciate and cherish whatever you write for me.
I’m the sort of author who loves prompts; I find them a great source of inspiration, especially with something like Yuletide because it gives me a bit more direction towards what my recipient wants. With that in mind, I’ve included a few vague-ish prompt suggestions with each fandom. Please don’t feel constrained by them if they don’t work for you! I’m just throwing them out there as optional inspiration.
General Likes:
• Hurt/Comfort, emphasis on the comfort
• Character-driven stories
• Familial/sibling relationships (actual blood families or friends/families of choice)
• Strong male friendships (Bromance, though I hesitate to use the term because it seems to have a wide range of definitions. For me it is close friendship without a sexual component. I’m a big believer that friendships involving whatever combination of genders can be close and loving without becoming sexual. That’s what I really love to read.)
• Happy endings
• Holiday stories are fine (though certainly not necessary if they’re not your thing)
• Plotty stuff is great and I can really get into it, but I also enjoy one-shots that act as tag scenes for episodes or vignettes that show little slices of life.
Dislikes:
• Incest
• Porn
• Slash
• Gore, excessive violence
• Mpreg
• Gender-bending
• Excessive swearing/foul language
• Main character death
My requests:
1) Terra Nova (Josh Shannon)
Tell me more of Josh’s life in Terra Nova. I love family interaction, particularly the father-son relationship between Josh and Jim or big brother stuff with Maddy and Zoe. No incest or slash, please.
Josh is one of my favorites in this fandom. And I love the Shannon family dynamics. There was definite friction between Jim and Josh, despite the obvious love there as well. I'd love to read something about their relationship; maybe something where they're stuck outside the gates and relying on each other or even just an everyday moment where Josh impresses Jim in some way. He's also an adorably awesome big brother with Zoe, and I'd love to see some more sibling interaction with Maddy.
If you want to branch out from the Shannon family, that's great too! We didn't see much interaction between Josh and Reynolds; that might be fun to explore. And his relationship with Skye is wonderfully complicated on both their parts; I'd like to see that developed more. Whichever other characters grab you, I'll love to read it!
2) Falling Skies (Jimmy Boland, Dan Weaver)
I’d love an exploration of the father-son-like bond between Jimmy and Weaver. No slash, please.
I was a latecomer to this show, and I must confess that I am not caught up yet. I’m mid-way through Season 2, past “Compass.” I love a lot of the characters and their relationships, but one of my favorites was Jimmy. I love him in Season 1, trying so hard to be a soldier and still so clearly, heartbreakingly a kid. The bond between him and Weaver intrigues me. Weaver has plenty issues of his own of course, not the least of which is being a father who screwed up and desperately misses his kids. That’s part of why he’s drawn to Jimmy I think, though also why he seems to be trying not to get too attached. I love the scene where Weaver saves Jimmy from the Skitter and Jimmy latches onto him, and Weaver seems quite thrown by it at first before embracing him in return.
Please give me more of their interactions! Maybe something about how Weaver decided to make him a fighter or how Jimmy came to the Second Mass in the first place. Or expound on the story of the compass, or a reunion after the season 1 finale. Or just anything in their everyday lives. Please feel free to either ignore Jimmy’s death and go AU or keep the setting prior to that.
3) Distress Call 911 Series (Ben Varga, Gordon McKittrick)
Anything focused on Ben and Gordon and their friendship will make my Yuletide! Hurt/comfort would be lovely; gen preferred.
I have adored this little series since I first picked it up over a decade ago. I always wished there were more than 7 books; I remember looking hopefully each time we went to a bookstore. If you are here for this request, I will be shocked but also thrilled on Christmas morning. :)
I must confess that the draw of the series for me is the relationship between Ben and Gordon. This is a well-written male friendship, and I love it. They dislike each other at first and are competing over the same girl, but despite their differences they grow to honestly care about each other and be great friends. It’s also packed with hurt/comfort scenarios, and the boys save each other at least once a book.
Plot ideas…maybe another try for an arrow-free camping trip? Or the trouble they could get into on a boring day on shift? Seriously, anything with these two as they are portrayed in the books will make me happy. You can send them to McDonald’s for a hamburger and I’ll love it. (Of course, Ben and Gordon never could seem to go anywhere without some sort of disaster, so the McDonald’s would probably catch fire or be robbed or something…)
4) Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Grant Ward, Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons, Melinda May)
Give me team dynamics! I want to see them getting to know each other, learning to work together, taking care of each other. Gen preferred.
Yay team! No seriously, I love them all and just want to see more of them interacting with each other. Please feel free to include Skye and Coulson if you wish. I'd love anything from bonding during downtime on the plane to a mission fic packed with danger and hurt/comfort opportunities.
What I love about a team dynamic like this is that they all bring something unique to the table and can always be surprised by and learn from each other. Show me Grant trying to teach Fitz and Simmons self-defense, or May mentoring Grant in some way, or anything else you can come up with. :)
5) So Weird (Jack Phillips, Fiona Phillips, Carey Bell)
I'd love an episode-like story with a supernatural element of the week and Fiona running headfirst into trouble with the guys along for the ride and trying to bail her out. But mostly I just love these characters, and I'd love to read their interactions. Gen preferred, no incest please.
Okay, so I kind of adored this show. It had the supernatural elements in a kid-friendly format, at times scary and deep but with lighter moments and never descending into horror. I also loved the familial atmosphere, particularly the sibling rivalry between Jack and Fi, who would tease mercilessly and fight but at the end of the day loved and protected each other fiercely. There was lots of angst and hurt/comfort mixed in with humor, and that's the sort of story I love to read.
I always thought of the Phillips and the Bells as one big sort of extended family, so I'm not too fond of any romance between these three and Clu, who I suppose I view like four siblings instead of two sets of two. I also prefer to avoid Annie. All of that said, there isn't much fic to be had in this fandom and I will really appreciate anything I get to read!
Thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings. And thank you so much for writing! I'm looking forward to my story and again, I will appreciate whatever you wish to write. :)
